Experimental film screening by legendary Canadian collective ‘Film Farm’ with Karel Doing
The internationally renowned Canadian artist filmmaking collective ‘Film Farm’ and the filmmaker Karel Doing presented a programme of their 16mm films and videos. Film Farm films have all been made since 1994 as a result of intensive workshops for twelve different artists each year, some novices – some highly experienced, who learn how to shoot, hand-process, tint/tone and edit 16mm film. These handmade films have been produced in the countryside using methods that increasingly involve experiments with biodegradable photographic chemistry. In 2016 Mary and David (Analogue Farm) were Film Farm participants and the experience was instrumental in setting up Analogue Farm. We were honoured to screen their films in Rossendale!
In recent years, Film Farm has shown in Los Angeles (Echo Park), Winnipeg (WNDX Festival), Toronto (Pleasure Dome) and LUX Moving Image (London, UK), EXiS Festival (Seoul, South Korea), Arkipel Festival (Jakarta, Indonesia) and Experimenta India (Bangalore) as part of 20th Anniversary Film Farm celebrations. Now they are embarking on their 25th Anniversary tour in the UK in May 2019 at Aberystwyth University in Wales, Analogue Farm in Rossendale, and in in Toronto, Canada July 10, 11 at TIFF Bell Lightbox.

Karel Doing was artist-in-residence at Film Farm in 2018. Since 1990 filmmaker and artist Karel Doing has been creating films, performances and installations focusing on sensorial and environmental topics. Through the study of material process, the recording of oral history and the (re)use of cinematic heritage he explores alternative knowledge systems. Doing’s work has been shown worldwide in cinemas, galleries, museums and on stage. He has has given workshops and lectures internationally at Willem de Kooning Academy, Piet Zwart Institute, KABK, Nordland Kunst og Filmfagskole, FAMU, University of East London, Ravensbourne College and School for New Dance Development. He is presently based in Cambridge and London.
